Kingfishers
on the Keer was commissioned by Keith Moore of Moore n'Wife,
Carnforth. The local area is noted for its Kingfishers, breeding
on the River Keer in summer and moving down to the coastal
saltmarsh at the Leighton Moss RSPB reserve in the autumn.
The
outside lid features a male and female Kingfisher. The distinguishing
feature is the orange lower bill of the female, in this case
the bird at the back. The group of three on the side of the
box are juveniles, recognised because they have dark grey
feet not the orange feet of the adult.
Opening
the box reveals two stuning images, one of a bird diving into
the water (even showing a reflection) and the other of it
emerging with opened wings. Steve used the "inside-outside"
technique he developed at Kingsley and Moorcroft Enamels,
but the level of detail achieved far surpasses anything he
created while working there. Just look at the individual feathering
of the emerging bird! A piece like this just wouldn't have
been commissioned for Moorcroft Enamels as the retail price
would have risen to prohibitive levels.
The
trial piece for Keer Kingfishers (see image of boxed piece
above) had the Kingfisher on the inside of the box rising
from the water having caught a fish. For the edition of 10
Stephen felt that the diving and emerging Kingfishers would
look more balanced with bills closed.
