In
1999 Stephen was asked to create a trial design to celebrate
the Millennium. Rather than greet the new millennium, he chose
to reflect on the passing of time and the threat to the planet
resulting from man's activity. As the sun sets for the last
time on the previous 1000 years, the animals of a tropical
paradise sit and watch, perhaps wondering whether their habitat
will still be around for future generations to enjoy. Sadly,
this colourful, attractive and thought-provoking piece was
rejected for production and only three pieces were made. One
was retained by the factory ( possibly sold off in the mad
closure sale?), one was bought and one was sold at an Ashwood
Nurseries event to raise money for the Acorn Hospice.
For
reasons best known to themselves, Moorcroft Enamels asked
Steve to design a simpler vase (on the M1 shape) to commemorate
the millennium, which went into production as an open edition
selling at £165 and known as PARADISE LOST. This vase
was not painted by Stephen and did not sell particularly well.
Many will feel that the original PEX box would have been a
much better way of marking the occasion!
