Terry
painted an enamel ginger jar for Moorcroft Enamels for the
first catalogue. It was an immediate success and became one
of his most sought after enamel pieces. As soon as the retailers
heard that Terry was about to start a Badger box under his
own brand on china they had no hesitation in placing orders
for all ten pieces of the edition...... without even knowing
what it would look like! They would not have been disappointed.
This
fabulous box makes the original enamel jar look plain and
ordinary! On the lid Terry has captured the moment at dusk
when the first Badgers emerge from the sett to test the air,
while round the outside of the box are a further three animals
exploring their surroundings.
Opening
the box reveals, in the base, a cute image of three youngsters
dozing inside a bracken-lined sett. Turning over the lid,
the viewer is greeted by the most delightful study of a further
Badger emerging from beneath the roots of a gorgeous gnarled
tree. The rims of the box and lid are gilded in the usual
24 carat gold.
Terry
always says that designing a box is the most demanding of
painting activities, as there are four separate designs to
create that all need to blend together. Looking at this piece
one can understand why - nine different poses for the badgers,
realistic and interesting vegetation and consistent evening
lighting were all required. A stunning piece that I am sure
will be much admired - yet again proving that there can't
be anything similar in the world market today that can compare
to Terry and Steve's freehand painted work for quality and
value!
